Everyone once in a while a horror film arises that ignites not only popular interest, but also scholarly conversation. That’s the case with SINNERS, directed by Ryan Coogler, a vampire story situated within African American culture. The film has sparked discussion not only of this culture in general, but especially issues related to depictions of religion in this context.
For a sampling of some of this discussion, see the article at Religion Dispatches where Yvonne Chireau, a contributor to our edited volume Horror Comics and Religion, discusses the expertise she provided on the film in relation to Hoodoo and Vodou. Then there’s an article at Religion News Service that explores the role of religion in the Black community. Finally, NEWSONE brings together a group of Black horror scholars to discuss the film.
