Thanks for sharing your similar angst. I appreciate your blog work and have added My Star Trek Scrapbook to my links categorized under Enjoying the Fantastic. It's great to connect with a fellow fan-atic. I hope we can meet at a convention of some kind in the near future.

John,

I can relate to your growing up years when it was a job to get genre material. I read all about them in the same mags you did, but actually seeing them was rare. I actually had to work around a stepdad that energetically battled against my efforts to view such, and so it was mainly when he was gone to work, or even better, Saturday nights spent at my Grandma's, that I got to see some of them.

If you haven't already, check out my Star Trek blog, linked above. You probably already know about my Monster Memories blog.

The main reason my collection of magazines, books and clippings is so big, is that I was getting them to have a little bit of the movies and TV shows, since it was so hard to actually view them back then. Now, I just collect the DVDs and little else.

I take NEWSWEEK's claims about Star Trek geeks being mainstream with a grain of salt, as my post indicated. I think sci fi and other genres of the fantastic are more readily accepted as valid forms of entertainment and consumerism, but this does not necessarily equate to members of our geek squad being mainstream. Better not retire our secret handshakes too quickly.

I always hear from other geeks that we've inherited the earth, but then I read about people's opinions of otaku and things and wonder where it is. Last I checked, the jocks still ran the schools.

Plus, I don't know how teabaggers fit into the United Federation of Planets. Are they like the Maquis? No wait, the Maquis had a legitimate issue...
