This sounds like my kind of community college class. I did something similar when teaching a course on theology and film for seminary. I used the original Planet of the Apes, coupled with sections of Eric Green's book on the film that touches on how 1960s and 1970s issues of race work within the Apes series. This approach was well received. Now that I know about Bellin's work I'd love to do a whole course on fantasy film and cultural analysis. Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Chad.

I am a huge fan of the King Kong chapter, which I use as the basis of a King Kong unit in my English 101 class at the community college. First we watch the original King Kong and read Bellin's chapter. The students respond to the claims in the chapter, which always succeeds in provoking a lot of discussion and analysis (and productive controversy). Then, we watch portions of the Jackson King Kong, and we compare/contrast the key issues, and how the story has changed over the time: the portrayal of Ann Darrow, the portrayal of Kong, the portrayal of the Natives, and the portrayal of Denham, and many more. This is really a brilliant chapter, and it is an excellent example of complex critical analysis.
